Lithuanian railcars and motor locomotives 1919-1940

I Rudnev, T Olsson, Zilvinas Urbutis

When Lithuania in 1918 became an independent state, there was an immediate need to adopt the railways to fucntion within the new boundaries as well as to find an economical alternative to steam traction. Narrow gaude railbuses were constructed at Kaunas from 1931, small locomotives imported from Germany and Sweden. Simmering railcars were introduced in 1934, fast MAN railcars in 1938. The outbreak of WWII made their service life brief.

Based on documents found in the Lithuanian Central Archives in Vilnius, which had been thought irretrievably lost, the author gives us a unique insight into how a small state railway dealt with the challenges of introducing internal combustion motive power.
