When Ronnie Scott's slim self-penned volume first appeared in 1979 (published by W. H. Allen), it commemorated the twentieth anniversary of the opening of Ronnie Scott's club.
By then Scott's club was securely ensconced as a vital part of London's nightlife, and although there were trying times ahead (less than two years later, faced with mounting back calculated PAYE arrears, the club went up for sale and was only saved by several philanthropic gestures from concerned admirers) it had successfully gone through its rite of passage and transcended its original purpose, that of being a convivial venue in which local jazz musicians could make music on their own terms, to become as much a tourist landmark as an internationally renown night time refuge for high art music.
By 1979, Ronnie Scott's however had also arguably passed through its golden age. Although regular playing visitors still included such firm Scott favourites as the saxophonists Dexter Gordon and Johnny Griffin, their visits acting as a reminder of the way in which it was Scott who had introduced both men to local audiences, the original 'flying by the seat of the pants' logic which had once accompanied their presentation was now a thing of the past.
