Belgian entrepreneurs built and operated tramways in several cities in the Ottoman Empire, initially with horses, later with electric trams. They were nationalised from 1939 and onwards, then run down. Those at Aleppo and Damascus lasted until 1967.
This is a fascinating account of the tramway systems at Beirut, Constantinople, Damascus, Salonika, Smyrna, Tripoli, Aleppo, Konya and Bagdad, illustrated with route maps, postcards and other photos. It also deals with locomotives and rolling stock supplied by Belgian manufacturers to the DHP and Hedjaz. The systems in Egypt are covered by a separate volume. 220 pages A4, numerous illustrations, hb.
